Western Cattle Egret

2 Western Cattle Egrets flew over our land in September 2022. This was our first sighting on our land. We get to see this species very easily in our region, whether on the big lakes (albufeiras) or obviously in the fields along with the cattle. We have already seen flocks of 70 to 80 birds. Nevertheless, they do not come that often on our land, reasons probably being the land is quite hilly, but most of all we do not have “cattle” :D Sometimes our neighbour brings his sheep to graze on our land, but we would definitely have more chances to see Western Cattle Egrets here if we had sheep or cows all the time.

Now being at the end of 2024, we have seen a Western Cattle Egret come feed by our pond a couple of times! It is an amazing sight to watch it look for frogs.
