Birds of our Land in Alentejo, Portugal
White Wagtail
2022 : the first few months living here, we would see the White Wagtail only occasionally on our land, often just flying over our house and garden. We felt that because we only had a tiny little pond, our land was probably not the ideal habitat for this species to stick around more. White Wagtails love water. Once the new bigger pond was built, we started to see one or two every day, often along with a Gray Wagtail.
And then, at the end of the year, this elegant species gifted us with one of the most magical wildlife shows we have had on our land so far. Up to 200 White Wagtails were coming every night, for more than a month, to roost in our “canas”. They would arrive late afternoon, starting to fly over the canas in circles, sometimes landing on the ground nearby, sometimes flying right over our heads, and progressively perched all together in the canas to spend the night as light would fade out.
