Eurasian Collared-Dove in Alentejo

Eurasian Collared-Dove photographed on our land

Since we moved to our new home in Alentejo last May, we have now been able to see and hear 50 bird species from our land! This is really exciting for us. We knew this part of Portugal, and this specific part of Alentejo, is great for birding, but we are still surprised to reach 50 species in just a bit more than 2 months! The 50th species is a Cetti’s Warbler that I heard while doing a sunrise walk on our land. It is probably living by our neighbour’s lake. As we plan to make our pond much bigger this summer, we hope we can have this species and many other ones breeding near our pond!

Birding on our land has already given us many fantastic moments. Highlights include seeing the Black-Winged Kite hunting, admiring more than 150 Barn Swallows flying all over us at sunset, watching Griffon and Cinereous Vultures passing by, or hearing the Red-necked Nightjar at dusk. Of course, there are still many bird species that I would like to see here. The main one is probably the European Turtle-Dove now. We are definitely looking forward to seeing more in the coming months.
